The Weight of Mountains (TWOM) is a filmmakers platform, residency, and a loose collective.
Filmmakers join the residency on location with their own individual ideas, as conduits and conjurors they respond to evocative notions of site-specifics.
Artistically, TWOM filmmakers explore the intersection of humanity and environment through their unique and reciprocal influences on-site. This may enable a collective and ongoing rhetorical investigation into the metaphoric and poetic notions of 'the weight of mountains' – as an allegory for an immeasurable affect of being in and with a place.
To varying degrees, filmmakers work with communities, locals, lore, subtleties, and stories inherent to both their own practice and the specific regions they are immersed into for approximately three months; ongoing relationships and networks often continue.
FILMMAKERS FUNDING:
The Weight of Mountains is artist-led, it does not have a funding body and as such we cannot provide funding or stipends. We are happy to provide support letters for grant applications.
For each residency, The Weight of Mountains (TWOM) aims to sponsor 2 filmmaker placements for applicants with exceptional talent and situations that may prevent them from attending without a sponsorship. Subject to availability.
For our upcoming residency in Vietnam, we have two supported places available for filmmakers from Vietnam or the greater South East Asian region to attend.
ELIGIBILITY:
- Must be over 21 years old
- Must have made at least 2 film works
- Attendance is subject to an application process and curatorial selection.
THE PROGRAM:
- Filmmakers are provided with a cross cultural and international collaboration or networking opportunity with the selection of filmmakers being from a competitive, worldwide application process.
- The intensive program fosters skill sharing between leading peers in film. Talks and workshops are encouraged enabling new learning, development, and skill-share opportunities.
- Artists will be able to connect and develop new ideas or work with other participating filmmakers enabling communal reflection on artistic ideas, collaborations, or developments to be established informally on-site.
- Film projects are self-driven and individual to enable personal artistic directions to emerge and strengthen. Producers, film crews, and collaborators are not permitted to join the selected filmmakers.
- The intensive's development focus is highly individualised that enables filmmakers to make entirely new work that is experimental, resourceful, and innovative for where they are in their practice and career.
- The residency works with artistic direction and involves a thematic approach; one that develops new interpretations or ideas of our humanity in relation to our surrounding environments. We are interested in this idea through multiple forms of film approaches: art film, interdisciplinary, web, media, linear narratives, scriptwriting, contemporary art, documentary, surreal or experimental, and analogue practices.
- A heavy focus lies in process and artistic development with presentation opportunities as optional. As such the program will offer a symposia programme and screening outcome. However artists are not required to finish a film on-site, but are encouraged to present their work if they're able to at that time.
